Luke begins with a reference to last year’s show, entitled “Poet Laureate” - he still has that ambition, but being married now with a house in Norwich, simply being a “man” is, it seems, important. Freedom is a key theme, and his verse is insistent, humorous and entertaining. He uses quotations from various books that have inspired him or suggested a tangent, including the bible, which he does not use for religious reasons. I noticed Zadie Smith in his bookpile, and I was intrigued to think what his take on her multicultural London might be, but sadly he didn’t get that far down the pile. This is a popular, enjoyable and enlightening hour.
