Cabaret Decay Unlimited
Assembly Aurora Nova

*****

Pure comedy genius is a rare find. Even more scarce, is to find it in a troupe that seem to be having so much fun at the same time. This is cabaret with a French twist. Don’t think for one minute that it’s all about mime and painted white faces (although these elements exist), this part comedy sketch, part comedy dance and part comedy song and it’s all spectacularly funny. The three members - two girls and one boy - want to take you on a journey to your death. They remind us that we are all slowly decaying and there is nothing we can do about it. So, with characteristically european joie de vivre, they suggest we should laugh and enjoy it, no? Decay Unlimited mix charm and likeability with astute comic timing. Here is an hour of beautifully paced magic that brings the smile of everyday recognition to the exotic or surreal. I particularly liked Bo Peep with her force-fed sheep, the stunningly danced male striptease, and the animated girl who mourns the catastrophic death of our planet while being upstaged by her own bouncing breasts as she changes costume. “Please, look at the plant!” she protests to an audience who can’t help but be diverted. How Very French! There’s real class here, high camp and a lot of joy - take a good friend and an even better glass of wine and don’t be afraid to laugh out loud!
