Butch - A Queen’s Struggle To Become A King
Pleasance Courtyard

****

There is something very appropriate about seeing this show the day after seeing The Bacchæ at the King’s Theatre. For this also, very lightly, is about the repression of an unorthodox aspect of humanity and the loss that can cause. In this case, free and unfettered expression by the human male is at stake - especially the gay male, but perhaps all men. Menno has become very concerned about his camp persona. He has fallen for a soldier who doesn’t like guys not to be guys. Menno quotes from an American book which instructs firmly on correct masculine behaviour. (Horrors! Is this published?) He tries not to dance with his hands above his shoulders etc. He goes to a gym to put on pounds. Why anyone with such a splendid neck and torso would want to change them, I don’t know! But, the soldier does not respect our hero, goes back to his ex, and the two sides of Menno struggle, but he decides he must be true to himself. This is an extremely winning show, and I suggest you go along, join in, sing and be happy to be you.
