This was a fantastically produced and performed show, detailing the life of the man behind the maths and the politics. Galois is a legend in the world of mathematics, whose genius was only recognised posthumously. The show details his short and very tragic life, which he sacrificed aged only 20 in the fight for revolution in France. A very emotive performance, which conveys the huge spectrum of emotions Galois experiences in his frustrations over his wasted talent, abandonment by family and political dismay. Galois is a hot-tempered individual who is failed by the right-wing authorities, and the young actors in this production are convincing, realistic and passionate in portraying this. Galois describes the maths world as ‘the most beautiful place you can ever visit, providing a purity and elegance that doesn’t exist in the real world’. In doing so, the show challenges preconceptions about people who are passionate about maths, demonstrating a ‘sentiment and beauty’. A few maths ‘in-jokes’ are included too, which were way over my head but very clever! This show is insightful, reflective, passionate and most of all challenges the way we think about maths, politics and the people behind it. Not to be missed!
