Lorca's Shadow
Diverse Attractions

****

This company meditate on the life of Lorca, the great and gay Spanish poet and playwright. Music, words and movement conjure up intense Andalucian heat on a cool Edinburgh evening. It was almost worth the ticket to see and hear the excellent and handsome flamenco guitarist Peter Strandberg. Andres Ausejo of Spain was imposing singing flamenco and acting in the lead role. Lorca’s words were conveyed in Spanish, English and in Sheltie, the Shetland dialect. The fraught relationship between the selfpromoting and magpie-like Dali and Lorca was portrayed,as was Lorca’s impression of New York. Lorca’s death loomed, which gave a chance for the words of Pablo Neruda, the great Chilean socialist poet, to be heard - a rarity in Edinburgh. Neruda was a friend, and due to meet Lorca the day Lorca was murdered by fascist agents. Yet this was an affirming and reassuring performance. Lorca’s work and integrity had won. There was a spirit of warm collaboration between the whole cast: some were very exoerienced, some not, but all acquitted themselves extremely well.
