Chicos Mambo in Meli-Melo
Assembly Freemason’s Hall

****

This whistle-stop romp through a host of different dance genres and physical performance is a joy to behold. With innovative quick-fire costume changes “before your very eyes” and constantly changing sound track to suit each mood, the audience is kept in anticipation, as one scene seamlessly morphs into the next. From Classical Ballet, Indian, Ice Dancing to a fresh take on Gymnastics, all delivered with tongue firmly in cheek (and what firm cheeks they are!). The bare stage provides a stark background for the fun and inventive use of props. Although the performance never pauses long enough to take itself too seriously, it still manages to provide a showcase for the obvious skill of the all male cast, as witnessed by their mastery of so many different styles, (some of which were even performed in high heels!) in one sixty minute treat. The audience reaction was both warm and positive. This is a show that works on more than one level, as it allows “those in the know” to laugh along with the cheeky send-ups, and others to just bask in the humour of a warm and witty performance the cast seemed to enjoy delivering. A gem.
